Family Forever
Family is where life begins and love never ends. The bond we share with our loved ones is unparalleled, and it's only natural that we want to capture these special moments to cherish for years to come. Private family photography sessions provide the perfect opportunity to freeze these heartfelt moments in time, creating beautiful memories that can be treasured for generations.
A special feeling of gratefulness and excitement comes over me when a request for a private family photography session arrives in my inbox. Whenever I talk about my favorite kind of sessions with my family and friends, I always have to talk about private family photography and the importance of having a family portrait that will serve as a centerpiece for your family’s captured memories. A collection of portraits that tell the wonderful story of this moment of time in your family’s life, with an artist's touch. These portraits could survive generations of family history and be shown with pride throughout decades, and who knows? Even centuries.
There is no set formula for a private family photography session. Every family is different, therefore, every session must be different. It is so important for me to get to know your family - Who are the people in your family portrait? Is this your first time? How do you envision your family photos to look like? Are you nervous about family photos? Are you excited? These are some of the questions you may find me asking, as we plan the perfect portrait scenario together.
Of course, I always love getting my husband Eric involved as well. He is great at talking to couples and sharing stories, joys, and struggles of being a parent. He also has a talent to make kids laugh and get a truly genuine smile out of them. Having my family come together with yours for a family portrait session is truly special.
I would like to share some tricks and tips on how to prepare for your family photo session:
Location Selection:
Consider Meaningful Locations: Choose a location that holds sentimental value to your family, such as your home, a favorite park, a beach you visit annually, or a place that represents a shared hobby or interest. We will always have some great locations to recommend as well.
Scout the Location: Visit the chosen location beforehand or discuss it with us to identify the best spots for photos. Look for areas with good lighting and interesting backgrounds.
Weather Contingency: Have a backup location or plan in case of unexpected weather conditions, ensuring that the session can proceed smoothly.
Gather the family for a discussion about your upcoming family photo session:
Let’s face it, posing and smiling isn’t for everyone in your family. Talking about nervousness and doubts about the session as a family will help set expectations and help those who may be hesitant relax and find their own way to enjoy the session. Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions you may have!
Wardrobe Coordination:
Coordinate, Don't Match: Instead of everyone wearing identical outfits, aim for a coordinated look. Choose a color palette that complements each other, and try to avoid complex patterns and logos. We recommend solid, muted and earthy colors.
Comfort is Key: Ensure that everyone feels comfortable in their outfits, especially children. Uncomfortable clothing can make the session less enjoyable.
Accessories and Layers: Accessories like scarves, hats, or jewelry can add a touch of personality to the photos. Layering can also create depth and visual interest.
Patience is Key:
Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that not every moment will be picture-perfect. Patience is essential, especially when working with young children or pets. Some of the best shots may come from unexpected, candid moments.
Take Breaks: If the session is long or if children or pets are involved, allow for short breaks to recharge and regroup. This can help prevent frustration and fatigue.
Pets:
Include Your Furry Friends: If you want to include pets in your family portraits, communicate this with us in advance. Ensure that the location is pet-friendly and that your pet is comfortable in the environment.
Have Treats and Toys: Bring treats and favorite toys to reward good behavior and keep your pet engaged during the session.
Plan Props and Poses:
Discuss Ideas: Collaborate with your photographer to brainstorm props and poses that align with your family's personality and the overall theme of the session.
Keep It Meaningful: Props should have personal significance. They can include items like a favorite book, a family heirloom, or sports equipment that represents your interests.
Natural Poses: While planning poses, prioritize natural and relaxed poses that reflect your family's genuine interactions. Avoid overly forced or posed expressions.
Kids
Keep kids engaged and entertained throughout the session to capture their genuine expressions and smiles. Bring their favorite toys, snacks, or games to use as props or distractions when needed.
Encourage natural interactions among family members by playing games or telling funny stories. This helps create authentic moments that make for heartwarming photos.
Be patient and flexible when working with children. They may need short breaks or moments to explore their surroundings, and that's okay. A patient and understanding approach will lead to more relaxed and joyful photos.
By incorporating these additional details into your family portrait session planning, you can ensure that all these tips contribute to creating meaningful and memorable photographs that truly represent your family's unique bond and personality. Can’t wait to see you and your family at the session!
